KICK OFF BAD HABITS

by Noi, Member of Khlong 8 Methodist Church, Thailand.

When I was young, I remembered seeing the name of Jesus on signboards pasted high up on electricity poles. I was not a believer then, and often found myself wondering who that was. I grew up in a family where drinking and quarrelling were commonplace. I also started drinking. Each time when I worked and managed to earn some money, I ended up spending all on drinking and partying with my friends. As a result of all the drinking, I was hot-tempered and very unreasonable.

But one day, my older sister brought me to Christ. I started attending church on Sundays. But life was still the same for me. I often found myself drinking and smoking. Life was wearisome. I was so sick of myself for not being able to kick off the bad habits. So, I knelt down and prayed to God, asking for His help to stop drinking and smoking. I prayed and said I couldn’t do it by my own strength. But with God, I can.

I started attending church earnestly after that. My life began to change as I lost the desire to drink or smoke. My face took on a healthier look. I became less hot-tempered and was more tolerant and ready to forgive others. More than that, I was more ready to help others around me. I could really experience the peace of God in me; and this made me realise that when we truly surrendered to God, all the unhealthy desires disappeared. But if we still chose to cling and refused to let go to God, it would stay with us. Repent, and turn to God, then our life will prosper and bear fruits. Thank You, God.

I had been in a Methodist church for the last few years. Through the guidance of the pastor, my life has improved. I grew in my relationship with God through the discipleship and Bible study classes. I am also actively serving in the church.

Dear Noi, Thank you for sharing your life transforming experience in and through your relationship with Christ and His church! Praise God that He has led you to a season of learning his Word and focusing on the meaning and practice of Christian discipleship. I am encouraged to witness your resolve to walk in his ways and to give up old habits such as excessive drinking that harmed your health. I pray that you will be strengthened in your faith, and that you will also serve as a testimony to those are struggling to be set free from old harmful habits. Take care. God bless ! Shalom.
