GOD IN TOTAL CONTROL

Loong

by Loong, Assistant Cell Leader of Mittaphab Methodist Church, Thailand.

Don’t let what happened caused us to be discouraged or to stop serving God. Give forth our best and leave the rest to God. We are just vessels in the hands of God to be used in the work of His kingdom.

Sawadeekrab, my name is Loong. I was appointed by my pastor to be an assistant leader for my cell group. In the beginning, all was good. However, in mid-2024, our cell group members were faced with various problems. One was arrested by the police for having an expired work permit. Another met with a motorcycle accident.

It all happened in the afternoon of 14 July when my wife received a call from the hospital. The nurse asked if we were related to Gong, my cell group member, and if we were able to make our way to Chiang Dao Hospital. I knew Gong was supposed to send his wife and 5-year-old son back to Myanmar that afternoon. But unfortunately, Gong met with an accident in Chiang Dao and was in critical condition. The doctor gave him only 1% chance of survival.

I was shocked to hear that, and I was at a loss what to do, especially when Gong’s wife was not around. So, I called my pastor. He advised me to try to contact Gong’s wife. He also prayed for Gong and me over the phone. Eventually, I managed to contact Arm, Gong’s wife, and delivered the news to her. But it was not easy for her as well to come back to Thailand as both her passport and permit to stay in Thailand had expired. Subsequently, an ambulance had sent Gong from Chiang Dao to a hospital in Chiang Mai. So, I went to the hospital to wait for and receive Gong. Afterwards, Arm called to say that she would make her way back to Thailand despite the risk of her illegal status. In my heart, I was praying unceasingly for God to perform a miracle in Gong’s life, and for Arm to be able to make a safe passage back.

At around 9pm that same evening, Arm called to say she was arrested and detained at Chiang Dao Police Station. And she was thus not able to make her way to the hospital. I called my pastor again and told him that Arm was detained, and that Gong had yet to come out from surgery. I didn’t know what to do to help anymore and sobbed over the phone. I asked him, “Why did God make me face so many problems as I serve Him?” My pastor encouraged me to stay calm. Although he also couldn’t answer my question, he said something that spoke deeply to me: “Do not let what happened caused us to be discouraged or to stop serving God. Give forth our best and leave the rest to God. We are just vessels in the hands of God to be used in the work of His kingdom. God is watching over both Gong and Arm. If God allowed these to happen, He is also in total control. You had given your best to help the family. All we can do now is to pray and trust that God is at work.” We left the hospital at 2am that morning.

At 6am, Arm called to say that she was in the hospital. I asked her how she found her way there. “The policemen sent me all the way here,” she replied. I truly thanked God that He used the police to enable Arm a safe passage to the hospital. More importantly, I thanked God that Gong, whom the doctor gave only 1% chance of survival, was out of hospital. He is now able to walk and talk just like any one of us.

I thank God for the chance to serve Him as a cell leader. Through the episode, I can confidently say that God is present in the midst of every problem and challenge we face. God is always at work. And we need to learn to surrender and trust.
